Debra Rutherford initiated the project when someone who she described as "a reliable source in the Ashland Community" said that Jimmy had been sleeping at a local restaurant due to not having enough money to pay his heating bills.
Debra then began to share her concern for Mountain Man with others. A number of sympathizers encouraged her to create a Facebook page. The page notched up over 375 "likes" in less than a week's time.
The incredible outpouring of empathy led to an online fundraising campaign being set up. An account was set up at gofundme.com, and four days later donations had almost topped $1,000.
A number of others stated on the Facebook page that they were inclined to give, but would rather give directly to Jimmy for security purposes.
Two days after the compassion efforts commenced new information arose as to Mountain Man's true living conditions. It also gave new insight into the extent of the kindness that Ashland residents have displayed towards Jimmy.
A source on the Facebook page said that Jimmy had not been living at a restaurant. Rather he had been enjoying the comforts of an well supplied apartment since Thanksgiving.
The Ashland Free Press was able to track down the landlord and confirm this information with him.
The landlord said that he had met Mountain Man on Thanksgiving Day as he was on his way to do some maintenance on one of his rentals. He discovered that Jimmy had been living without heat or other necessities, like water and electric.
Being that he had an apartment that was open, he decided to allow Mountain Man to live there through the winter months rent free.
The charity didn't stop there though. This source said that others have banded together to provide more basic necessities, such as a bed, blankets, food, kitchen supplies, and a microwave.
As for the money donated to the gofundme account, no exact course has been determined for the allocation of the funds as of yet. The funds continue to accrue in an individuals account. For this reason some are hesitant to give to the gofundme account and recommend that any gifts be given directly to Mountain Man.
The Facebook page said that a lawyer is being consulted to ensure safe and effective dismemberment of the funds. The account holder also said that a spreadsheet is being created to help ensure that all money is accounted for.
One suggestion has been getting Jimmy an eye exam and a new pair of glasses. Others have included depositing the money in Mountain Man's bank account or setting up a fund for public transit. At this point though, no definite plan has been made public.
Nevertheless, one consensus does seem to have been reached: Mountain Man well deserves the landslide of benevolence.
Ms. Rutherford stated that "Jimmy is a selfless man who only thinks of others." The landlord concurred, by noting many of the ways that Mountain Man seeks to give to people in need.
